Holocaust Memorial Day Event – Wednesday, 27th January, 2016
This is a public event being held in All Saints Square, Rotherham Town Centre at midday on Wednesday 27th January 2016, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
This is the first in a series of events taking place in Rotherham to mark the Holocaust. It will link in to the Young People’s Holocaust Memorial event on the evening of the 28th January and the Anne Frank exhibition which will be displayed in Riverside House from 15th February to the 30th March 2016, involving local school children.
The central vision of Holocaust Memorial Day is to learn from the past in order to create a safer, better future. The national theme this year is ‘Don’t Stand By’ which considers our individual responsibilities not to be bystanders to hate crime and prejudice.
This year’s theme also ties in with our new vision for the borough, that we value decency and dignity and come together as one community to build a future we can all share where no-one is left behind. We would like the focus for Rotherham to be on individual acts of kindness that signify we will not turn a blind eye when those around us face prejudice or victimisation.
On the day there will be an opportunity for you to leave your own pledge of support on our “message tree”.
Programme: We will be gathering in All Saints Square prior to the start of the ceremony
12:00pm Opening and welcome by the Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Maggi Clark
12:10pm Children’s readings, music and speeches
12:25pm Closing speech by the Leader of the Council, Councillor Chris Read
